The 12 Human Design Profiles

In Human Design you'll find 6 leading profile lines, personality traits, that lead us throughout our entire life.

These lines, from 1-6, appear in our Human Design charts- as the numbers following the dot in the planetary sections of our conscious (Personality, right side) and unconscious (Design, left side).

While each planet holds it's own Gate (energy, theme) in both our conscious and unconscious sides, in determining our "Profile" in Human Design, or our Personality, we look at the first 2 planets: Sun & Earth.

Each profile in Human Design combines 2 profile line, With 12 possible combinations!

For example, with the chart below, you can see that on the conscious side, Sun & Earth have gates with a Profile line 4 after the dot. On the unconscious side you can see that Sun & Earth have the Profile line 6 after the dot.

That creates Profile 4/6.

In order to understand your Human Design profile fully you must first understand the meaning behind each of the individual profile lines, as well as their connection- which one comes first? (which one is the one we live and embody consciously, and which one operates in our subconscious- as well as shine brighter in the eyes of others).

The 6 profile lines in Human Design can be placed in 2 separate categories:

Internal lines, and external lines.

INTERNAL LINES

The first group of lines in Human Design, Lines 1,2 and 3, are "internal" lines. Having this line in your profile means that you learn about yourself and the world- by interacting with yourself or with the world directly.

LINE 1 - THE INVESTIGATOR

The Investigator is driven by a deep need for security and knowledge. They are naturally inquisitive and often dive into research, collecting information to build a solid foundation. They seek understanding before taking action, and their detailed approach makes them experts in their fields.

Key Traits: Thorough, curious, and analytical.

LINE 2 - THE HERMIT

The Hermit is introspective and naturally gifted in certain areas, though they may not always recognize it themselves. They require time alone to recharge and connect with their inner wisdom. While they may appear to withdraw from the world, they’re often drawn out by others to share their talents.

Key Traits: Reclusive, self-reliant, and effortlessly talented.

LINE 3 - THE EXPERIMENTER / MARTYR

The Experimenter learns through trial and error. They are here to experience life firsthand and embrace mistakes as valuable lessons. While they may encounter failure, it’s through these experiences that they grow, refine their approach, and ultimately gain wisdom to share.

Key Traits: Resilient, adaptable, and a quick learner through experience.

EXTERNAL LINES

The second group of lines, lines 4,5 and 6, are types that gain clarity or are able to learn about the world and themselves- by reflecting on their interactions with others and the world.

LINE 4 - THE INFLUENCER / NETWORKER

The Influencer thrives on connection and building relationships. They have a natural ability to influence others through their networks, bringing people together for shared goals. They are often the bridge between groups and play a key role in fostering community and collaboration.

Key Traits: Sociable, influential, and community-focused.

LINE 5 - THE HERETIC

The Heretic challenges the status quo with innovative ideas and a strong sense of individuality. They often question conventional beliefs and push boundaries, making them natural reformers. While their bold ideas can sometimes be misunderstood, they have a powerful ability to lead change.

Key Traits: Visionary, disruptive, and trailblazing.

LINE 6 - THE ROLE MODEL / TEACHER

No matter what line you have in your profile- there is always a place for growth, self-development, overcoming our shadows, and becoming the best versions of ourselves. If you have lines 1-5 you ARE these lines for your entire life.

However, Line 6, The Role Model, is the only profile line that transforms throughout life, regardless of personal growth or effort. It holds 3 main phases:

From birth to age 28-30 - Line 6 is learning from experience, from trial and error, often living an "extreme" version of Line 3.

Following these years of trial and error, of deep interaction with the world, Line 6 between the age 28-30 and 50 "goes on the roof". (yeah, weird term, I know). That means, spiritually, rising above the level of "lived life" and starting a prolonged period of "observing". These years are very reflective, with a need to settle down, or replace the extreme external experiences with "smaller" internal experiences.

Around age 50, people with the Line 6 "come down from the roof" - re-joining humanity after absorbing the life lessons of themselves and others in their path- and embodying the true Role Model. The ultimate teacher of life.

Key Traits: Wise, authentic, and inspirational.

The 12 Profiles in Human Design Explained:

As mentioned, each profile carries 2 profile lines, and they can appear as a conscious line, or an unconscious line.

There are 12 possible combinations of the 6 lines:

10 of them include a high line (external) and a low line (internal), while 2 of them (profile 1/3 and 4/6) only hold a single directive of lines.

So, let's take a deeper dive into the personalities in Human design:

Profile 1/3 – The Investigative Experimenter

The 1/3 profile is called The Investigative Martyr — or more positively, The Curious Experimenter. You are here to build a solid foundation (Line 1) and then road-test it through real-life trial-and-error (Line 3). Your life is one of learning, testing, and refining — which gives you both depth and resilience. You become a living example of what truly works because you’ve studied it, tried it, failed with it, and found what actually holds up.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

When faced with any situation, your mind first moves through Line 1 energy: you investigate, research, and want to feel secure in your knowledge before taking action. Then, your subconscious Line 3 kicks in — it takes that information out into the world and tests it. You are not satisfied with theory alone; you need to know what happens in real life. This creates a beautiful cycle of “study → experiment → integrate.”

Profile 1/4 – The Investigative Opportunist

The 1/4 profile is known as The Investigator-Opportunist, a combination that loves to build a strong foundation of knowledge (Line 1) and then share it with their close network (Line 4). You are here to dig deep into what is solid and trustworthy — and then offer that wisdom to others in a way that creates connection and opportunity for your community.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

Your first response is always to research and investigate. You want to feel secure in what you know before sharing it. Once you feel grounded, your subconscious Line 4 steps in and naturally shares that knowledge with your circle, turning information into influence. This profile creates a flow of “study → integrate → share.”

Profile 2/4 – The Hermit Opportunist

The 2/4 profile is The Natural Networker, a blend of the gifted, self-contained Hermit (Line 2) and the relational Opportunist (Line 4). You are here to nurture your natural talents, then share them with your network when you are recognized or invited. This is a profile of rhythm — balancing alone time with community time.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You start by retreating into your Line 2 energy — reflecting, resting, or developing your natural gifts. Then your subconscious Line 4 pulls you outward, connecting you with others who need what you have. This profile moves in a cycle of “retreat → recharge → connect → share.”

Profile 2/5 – The Hermit Heretic

The 2/5 profile is The Practical Mystic, a combination of the naturally gifted Hermit (Line 2) and the problem-solving Heretic (Line 5). You are here to retreat, hone your natural gifts, and then offer practical solutions that can impact many people.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You begin by pulling inward, letting your natural talents surface. Then your subconscious Line 5 energy pulls you forward into visibility when others recognize that you have a solution. This creates a flow of “retreat → develop → respond to projection → offer solution.”

Profile 3/5 – The Experiential Problem-Solver

The 3/5 profile is called The Great Life Teacher — a blend of the trial-and-error Experimenter (Line 3) and the practical Heretic (Line 5). You are here to learn through real-life experience, find what works, and then share it as a practical solution for others. Your life path is full of discovery, challenge, and wisdom that benefits the collective.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You start by experimenting — trying, failing, and gathering data (Line 3). Then your subconscious Line 5 energy steps in and finds ways to turn those lessons into something useful for others. This creates a flow of “experiment → extract lesson → offer solution.”

Profile 3/6 – The Experimenter Role Model

The 3/6 profile is called The Wise Adventurer, combining the Experimenter (Line 3) and the Role Model (Line 6). You are here to live a life of learning — your first phase is full of trial and error, and then you slowly integrate those lessons into a deep well of wisdom that others learn from just by watching you.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You begin with trial and error (Line 3), experiencing life firsthand. Then your subconscious Line 6 steps back to reflect on the lessons, turning experience into wisdom. Over time, this creates a flow of “experiment → reflect → embody.”

Profile 4/6 – The Networked Role Model

The 4/6 profile is The Trusted Guide, a blend of the relationship-focused Opportunist (Line 4) and the visionary Role Model (Line 6). You are here to build a strong, loyal network and then lead by example, inspiring others through the way you live and the wisdom you share.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You first connect with your network (Line 4), sharing knowledge and opportunities. Then your subconscious Line 6 energy reflects and integrates, allowing you to embody wisdom and be seen as a guide. This creates a flow of “connect → share → embody wisdom.”

Profile 4/1 – The Opportunist Investigator

The 4/1 profile is The Foundational Connector, a rare profile that blends the network-focused Opportunist (Line 4) with the deeply rooted Investigator (Line 1). You are here to build a foundation of knowledge and share it through your relationships — but your life path is unusually fixed and resilient, meaning you are less likely to be thrown off course by external influence.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You start with connection (Line 4), engaging your network. Then your subconscious Line 1 provides the depth and security to back up what you share. This creates a flow of “connect → ground → deliver truth.”

Profile 5/1 – The Heretic Investigator

The 5/1 profile is The Problem-Solving Leader, combining the projection-filled Heretic (Line 5) with the solid Investigator (Line 1). You are here to research deeply and then present practical, universal solutions to the world.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You start with the energy of leadership (Line 5), noticing where solutions are needed. Then your subconscious Line 1 digs deep, ensuring your solutions are built on a solid foundation. This creates a flow of “lead → research → deliver.”

Profile 5/2 – The Heretic Hermit

The 5/2 profile is The Reluctant Savior, blending the visible Heretic (Line 5) with the inward-focused Hermit (Line 2). You are here to bring your natural gifts forward as solutions for others, but only when the timing and invitation feel right.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You first feel the call of Line 5 — people projecting their needs onto you. Then your subconscious Line 2 energy either draws you out (when it’s correct) or pulls you back into retreat to rest and reset. This creates a flow of “called → step forward (or retreat) → offer gift.”

Profile 6/2 – The Role Model Hermit

The 6/2 profile is The Wise Hermit, a combination of the visionary Role Model (Line 6) and the naturally gifted Hermit (Line 2). You are here to live out the three-part life process of Line 6 while also needing solitude to integrate your wisdom.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You begin with Line 6’s life path — experiment, retreat, then embody wisdom. Your subconscious Line 2 gives you a natural gift and need for retreat, which deepens your wisdom. This creates a flow of “live → reflect → retreat → embody.”

Profile 6/3 – The Role Model Experimenter

The 6/3 profile is The Resilient Sage, combining the Role Model (Line 6) with the Experimenter (Line 3). Your life is one of constant evolution — you learn through trial and error, and your wisdom deepens through experience.

Thought Process – How These Lines Work Together:

You first meet life with the perspective of Line 6, noticing patterns and seeking alignment. Then your subconscious Line 3 leads you into experiment, risk, and discovery — which eventually returns you to a higher level of wisdom. This creates a flow of “seek → experiment → integrate → seek again.”

In many ways, we turn to Human Design in order to help us create a better future for ourselves, and for those we love; but a big part of having a better future- is the ability to let go of the traumas we carry.

While Human Design is not about specific traumas you might have been through, each part of our design can generate it's own trauma; and a massive one sits within our Profile (made out of the lines following the gates in your conscious and design sun & earth placements).

Human Design Profiles are made from 2 of the 6 Profile Lines- the 6 archetypes of personality.

In this PDF you'll find information on the trauma each line carries, as well as journaling/reflective questions to help you start the process of healing.
